A seminary teacher was gunned down and four others injured in Landhi allegedly by the firing of Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel after a clash erupted between the seminary students and the paramilitary soldiers on Thursday.
In an incident, details of which remained shrouded in mystery till late night, police arrested three FC personnel for allegedly killing a religious teacher of a seminary and injuring four others.
The victims were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where the condition of two of the injured was stated to be critical.
The deceased was identified as Muhammad Rehman while the injured were Zar Wali, Ali Zaman, Shuakat and Sher Jan.
The seminary students later encircled the Quaidabad police station to protest the killing of their colleague and raised slogans against the FC. Talking with Pakistan Today, Quaidabad police station sub-inspector Saleh Muhammad Marwat said the incident took place after an exchange of hot words between a man, who was later identified as a FC hawalder, and students of Madrassa-e-Darul Quran in the Nagari Mill area of Landhi No 22.
“Muhammad Khursheed was in plainclothes and returning after inspecting three FC posts in Quaidabad,” the police officer said. “The FC soldier asked the seminary students to remove a sand crushing machine parked outside the seminary for construction and open the roadway, resulting in a quarrel with the seminary students.”
Marwat said the FC jawan called in his colleagues for help when the students attacked him.
“On Khursheed’s call, two FC personnel posted at the Hospital Chowrangi picket arrived and started thrashing the seminary students,” he said. “However, the pupils overpowered the three paramilitary soldiers, who resorted to aerial firing.”
“A student of the seminary was killed and four others, including bystanders, sustained serious bullet wounds,” Marwat said. “The deceased was identified as Rehman, who also used to teach at the madressa.”
Malir Superintendent of Police Zahid Hussain Shah told Pakistan Today that the police have arrested the three alleged accused FC personnel identified as Khursheed, Faraz and Liaquat and registered an FIR (119/ 12) under sections 302, 324 and 34 of the Pakistan Panel Code (PPC) on the complaint of Qari Fazl Rehman, the brother-in-law of the deceased.
A large number of people attended the funeral prayer of Rehman held at the Hospital Chowrangi Road.
The body of the deceased was later shifted to his hometown Batgram in Hazara district for burial.
