A petition has been moved in the Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry seeking court directions to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to thoroughly investigate the moveable, immoveable assets and income sources of President Asif Ali Zardari for collecting tax from him. The petition was filed by Advocate Syed Feroz Shah Gilani and impleads the federal government through Law and Justice secretary, minister for finance, Federal Board of Revenue chairman and the president.
The petitioner contended that Zardari and his late spouse, Benazir Bhutto, possessed bank accounts in Switzerland that had $60 million. He added that Zardari had not disclosed his wealth to evade income and wealth. He said the president and his family also owned the Rockwood Surrey Palace of England and had concealed other property owned by him or his family members in USA, France, Spain Dubai and in Pakistan. The petitioner said the notorious NRO 2007 was declared void ab initio by the SC and per that judgment the FBR was duty bound to investigate all of his assets, incomes and expenditure of Zardari and his dependents since it was causing a loss of billions of rupees to national exchequer in terms of income and wealth tax. The applicant submitted that after completing the investigation regarding assets of Zardari, he should be liable to pay taxes according to his wealth and property.
