The restoration project ongoing at historical Lahore Fort will be completed by end June with the estimated cost of Rs 21 million. “The work is progressing satisfactorily”, said Lahore Fort Deputy Director Maqsood Ahmed Malik while talking to APP on Wednesday. He explained that Shahi Hamam, Dewan-e-Khas and Jahangeeri courtyard (Ahata) were undergoing conservation work with an estimated Rs 21 million. “In line with the importance of originality Kasuri chuna is being used for the conservation work”, he explained.
I was there in March 2011, and the dilapidated condition and utter ruin that the fort is in, Rs.21 million is a drop in a bucket..Not only we need at least 100 times more funding but also artisans who are experienced in the craft of restoration to keep the monument as close to its depiction of the Mughal era. Unfortunately the "little" work being done by the few men on site was of extremely poor quality thus causing more harm than the intended outcome.
