Haitian President Michel Martelly has asked Foreign Minister Laurent Lamothe to become prime minister and form a new government after the nation’s last premier resigned, an official said Thursday. Lamothe will replace Garry Conille, who abruptly stood down Friday after just four months in office, bringing new political turmoil to impoverished Haiti, which is struggling to recover from a catastrophic 2010 earthquake. The process of appointing Lamothe, who is considered one of Martelly’s closest aides and who studied in Haiti and in the United States, was to begin shortly in parliament, according to the official.
