Ruling Pakistan Peoples Party emerged as victorious in by-poll contest held on Saturday for 10 seats of National and provincial assembly, unofficial results which appeared on Sunday said.
According to unofficial results, PPP secured two seats of NA and two Sindh assembly seats, opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz clinched three seats — one NA and two Punjab Assembly – as its candidates secured PPP’s vacated seats.
The Awami National Party and PML-Functional and an independent candidate backed by PML-N won one seat each, while vote recount in underway in Kasur.
Out of six National and four provincial assembly seats, the PPP was leading in four constituencies while PML-N in three.
The ruling PPP lost one of its earlier National Assembly seats in Kasur that had been vacated by former foreign minister Sardar Aseff Ahmed Ali and another in the Punjab Assembly from Attock.
An independent candidate, Zahid Lakhvi won the National Assembly seat (NA-140) from Kasur after defeating another independent, Malik Rashid. However, vote recount is underway over the charges of bogus voting in the constituency.
Later result on NA-140 seat was cancelled as election commission announced rechecking of votes in this constituency.
In Mardan and Mianwali, women were barred from voting at a number of polling stations. In NA-9 of Mardan, ANP’s Himat Ullah Mayar defeated JUI’s Shuja Ul-Mulk
In Multan, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son Syed Ali Musa Gilani secured NA-148 seat which had been vacated by former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi after joining the Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI).
PML-N’s Tariq Rasheed defeated PPP’s Malik Liaquat Dogar after a good fight at NA-149 in Multan.
In Vehari, PPP’s Natasha Daultana secured the National Assembly constituency, NA-168 beating her PML-N rival Bilal Akbar Bhatti.
Similarly, the PML-F retained its National Assembly seat in Rahimyar Khan, southern Punjab, as its candidate Syed Mustafa Mehmood defeated nine independents.
The PML-N’s Adil Abdullah Rokhri has won the by-election held on Punjab Assembly seat (PP-44 Mianwali).
In Attack, PPP candidate Malik Sameen Khan lost the seat to PML-N’s Malik Azam Khan. It was PPP’s earlier won Punjab Assembly seat, vacant after PPP MPA Malik Khurram Ali resigned, joining the PTI.
In Badin, Hasnain Mirza of the PPP won PS-57 seat that had been vacated by his father and former provincial home minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza.
Hasnain defeated his rival Syed Pappu Shah who secured just 7548 votes against Hasnani’s 40552.
The PPP also retained its provincial assembly seat from Tando Muhammad Khan (PS-53 Hyderabad-XI) where Waheeda Shah, the widow of former PPP MPA Mohsin Shah Bukhari, defeated 10 other independents in a one-sided contest.
Syed Ali Musa Gilani, the son of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza, is among the PPP’s victors in Saturday by-poll contest held on for 10 seats of National and provincial assembly, media reported on Sunday.
Ali was victorious on NA-148 Multan which had been vacated by former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi after joining the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI).
PM Gilani’s elder son, Abdul Qadir Gilani, and younger brother Mujtaba Gilani are already Punjab Assembly members.
Interestingly, in his family, PM Gilani is the one who secured seat in 2008 general polls while his son Abdul Qadir was defeated by rival candidate from NA-151 in the same election.
Qadir, later, contested and won by-polls from Multan, and this time his brother Ali is joining the National Assembly via by-polls. Thanks to the by-elections.
One of the cadidate (a very zabardast wowan)who won the election slapped the polling officer. This woman should be booked for assualt and should be in jail instaed of assembly. What kind of bills this woman will table making slapping a lawful act. some ppp leader justified this assault by saying that she is a widow and was upset. maybe she widow because she she slapped her husband to death.
