Kidnapping at PU leaves security apparatus exposed

Iqra Nafees, 19, a student of B.Com Part 1 at Hailey College of Commerce was kidnapped by unidentified individuals from the Punjab University (PU) premises exposing the security arrangements made by the PU administration for the security of students and teachers. Iqra resided in the PU residential colony. Rahat, Iqra’s maternal uncle, said Iqra was living with his family in the PU residential area and left her home on Thursday around 3 pm to take her part-1 final exam at Hailey College of Commerce. He said Iqra would usually return by 615 pm or 630 pm daily but did not return on time on Thursday when the family began a search. He said no trace of Iqra was found and no one could confirm if she took her exam. He said some students informed the family that they had seen Iqra being loaded onto a Suzuki pickup van by unidentified kidnappers. He said the students had immediately informed the PU Resident Officer, who told them to search for her before informing police. He said after failing to find Iqra, her brother, Adeel, filed a complaint with the Muslim Town Police to register a case late on Thursday night. He said the duty officer received the complaint but refused to register a case pending the Station House Officer’s (SHO) orders on Friday. On Friday, Muslim Town Police registered case number 82/12 against unidentified kidnappers on the complaint of Adeel Khan and started a search. Talking about the investigation, Rahat said police had traced Iqra’s cell phone record and traced phone calls from family members and a female friend. He said they contacted a close friend of Iqra who told them she had not met them since two days. He said Iqra had never developed relationships with either male or female colleagues nor did the family have any enmity. Meanwhile, late on Friday night, Hailey College students lodged a protest in front of PU Gate #1. Students blocked the road for two hours and chanted slogans against police and the PU administration and demanded Iqra’s immediate recovery.
Student shot outside PU hostel: A Punjab University (PU) student sustained bullet wounds due to firing by four armed men outside hostel number 16 located in the PU premises on Friday. Police said two groups clashed outside PU hostel number 16 during which four members of a group, including Arsaan Tarid, his brother and two unidentified men opened fire. Asim Gujjar, a student, sustained bullet injuries due to the firing. Police were informed after which heavy contingent of police arrived and shifted Asim to Jinnah Hospital where doctors declared him stable. Police investigators collected empty bullet shells from the crime scene and registered a case on the complaint of PU Jamiat Nazim Awais Aqeel against the four accused.
