Basant is already banned: LHC

The Lahore High Court on Friday disposed of a petition seeking permanent ban on Basant when the court was told that Lahore City District Government had already banned it. Justice Umar Ata Bandial was hearing the petition filed by an advocate, Rana Ilamuddin Ghazi. The District Government’s counsel Mian Iftikhar appeared before the court and said that Basant would not be celebrated as the administration had neither lifted the ban nor intended to do so.He said that Kite Flying Association, through its secretary, had filed an application to the Lahore DCO seeking permission to celebrate basant on February 25 and 26; but, the DCO had rejected it.
He said the government was aware of the fact that many people lost their lives during the Basant frenzy. The petitioner had pleaded that Basant was a Hindu festival and its celebration promoted the Indian culture. He pointed that Basant was being celebrated in Lahore on February 25 and 26; and wanted the police to be ordered to launch a crackdown on the violators. The court after hearing the arguments disposed of the petition.
