Pre-symposium activities are at their height at the Liaquat National Hospital ahead of its 7th Medical Symposium to kick off on Friday (today). On Thursday, a two-day intensive Cadaveric Total Knee and Total Hip Arthroplasty Course was started by the Department of Orthopaedics, supervised by the eminent faculty Professor Shahid Noor, Dr Zaki Idrees and Dr Intekhab Taufiq. This was the first time in the history of the course that an international faculty member, eminent joint replacement surgeon from Belgium, Prof Philippe Van Overschelde, also participated in collaboration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Pakistan Arthroplasty Forum and Pakistan Orthopaedic Association. The main objective of the course was to train orthopaedic surgeons around the country so that facilities of joint replacement surgery could be spread to other cities, enabling ease of access to such facilities. Live surgery demonstrations in the form of three knee replacement surgeries provided the participants of the course with excellent overview of practical aspects of joint replacement surgery and problems encountered. The highlight of the courses was the hands-on cadaveric surgery sessions on total knee and total hip replacement.
