Shots were fired into a crowd of anti-US demonstrators trying to march on the centre of the capital Kabul Wednesday, wounding at least three people, an AFP photographer said.
“I saw three people with injuries. One was shot in the leg, the other in the arm and a third person had blood on his body,” photographer Shah Marai said, adding that he could not determine who had fired the shots.
Police spokesman Ashmat Estanakzai told AFP that the demonstration “got violent after they attacked Camp Phoenix,” a US base on the Jalalabad road, a main artery from the city to the east.
“They are marching toward Kabul. Police are trying to stop them. We have sent more reinforcements to the area.”
He denied that police had fired at protesters, who burned cars and attacked shops as they tried to march on the city centre.
The US embassy announced it was on lockdown and all travel was suspended.
