Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammed Chaudhry on Wednesday said the courts get bad name after criminals are freed in the event the police fail to submit challans.
He gave these remarks while heading a two-judge bench hearing a bail application of Ali Nawaz, involved in killing his wife advocate Shabnum Faryal at the SC Lahore Registry.
Deploring the situation regarding the presence of over 2300 people hustled into the Punjab jails, Chief Justice Chaudhry said that it seems as if the entire police force has been put on some other job, with no one taking care of the accused present at prisons.
It should be mentioned here, the court yesterday took strict note of police failing to present challans on time, and sought details of the cases of prisoners whose challans had not been presented to the courts.
Addressing the top police officials present at the courtroom, the CJP Chaudhry remarked, “You should know what action to take up if you find any of your officers responsible.”
Directing Inspector General of Punjab Police Haji Habibur Rahman to present the record of all such prisoners tomorrow, Chief Justice Chaudhry said, “Don’t subject the courts to ridicule. you should have come after completing all this work.”
“The worst situation exists in Punjab. So, Mr. Inspector General, you should take action against those responsible for the situation, instead of taking rest at night, as the police do not submit challans on time and hence, cause the criminals to be set free. But, in the long run, the courts get slur.”
