A 17-year-old boy drowned in the canal while trying to rescue his elder brother in the Batapur Police area on Tuesday. According to details, Jabir, 20, and Amir, 17, residents of the Mehmood Booti area were cutting branches from trees at the canal bank to make miswak (chewing sticks for oral hygiene) when Jabir slipped into the canal. Amir dived into the canal to save his drowning brother, but was drowned in the attempt. Local residents informed the rescue officials, who rescued Jabir and took him to a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. Rescue officials however failed to find any trace of Amir despite 10-hour long efforts. They suspended the operation and will resume the search today (Wednesday).
