Defence and political analysts on Tuesday denounced Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s briefing on Benazir Bhutto murder case in teh Sindh Assembly as “a bundle of contradictions”.
Renowned defence analyst Ikram Sehgal said Malik’s briefing was in itself a contradiction, considering that Malik took no action against the very Interior Ministry/ intelligence team that refused VIP security for Benazir, and it continued to serve for two years under Malik’s authority. Sehgal also expressed deep mystification over grant of job extension to former interior secretary Kamal Shah by Malik, despite Shah’s failure to protect Benazir.
Another noted analyst Mujeebur Rehman Shami was stunned by Malik’s portrayal of Baitullah Mehsud’s connivance with then president Pervez Musharraf in Benazir’s murder, wondering how would Malik prove his point in a court of law.
Senior journalist and analyst, Arif Nizami said Malik’s briefing was “incomplete”, and said it was a vain effort by the PPP to pacify the voters as the general elections were drawing near. Dr Hassan Askari said the government still had to do a lot regarding the investigations into the case.
