Vegetable, chicken prices on the rise

Vegetable and chicken prices increased for the second consecutive week while fruit prices decreased. Out of the 27 registered vegetables with the market committee, prices of only five decreased while prices of 12 increased and 10 remained constant. Chicken prices kept increasing and touched Rs 225 per kilogrammes while last Sunday it was Rs 200. Chicken sellers said that sales decreased by around 50 percent due to high prices. “People are inclined to buy mutton and beef because of high chicken prices,” seller Mujahid Hussain said, adding that beef price was less than chicken due to which sales dropped by 50 percent.
Prices of ginger, cucumber, spinach, peas and carrot increased while prices of garlic, potatoes, lemon and cabbage remained stable. Prices of ginger, onions and tomatoes decreased. Special CDGL teams visited bazaars at Model Town, Wahdat Road, Shadman and Johar Town and registered cases against shopkeepers for overcharging and selling substandard vegetables and fruits. The teams collected Rs 5,500 fine and cancelled five stalls.
