A constitutional petition was filed in the Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday, seeking foolproof security for judges and their families. The matter is likely to be taken up on Monday.
The petition was under Article 199 of the constitution by human rights activist Iqbal Kazmi.
In the petition, Kazmi submitted that according to Article 4 of the constitution, providing security of life to every citizen is the basic responsibility of the state.
Citing the federal government through the interior secretary and the Sindh government through the home secretary, the inspector general of police and the Rangers director general as respondents, the petitioner further submitted that government has provided foolproof security to ministers and government high-ups, but no proper measures have been taken for judges and their families.
In his petition, he stated the administrator judge of the anti-terrorism courts, also a serving judge of the SHC, has received threats on many occasions and the home of apex court judge Amir Hani Muslim was also attacked some days ago.
The chief minister and his family have foolproof security and also been provided with special squads, but at the same time, the SHC chief justice, the head of the provincial judiciary, has been given no such facilities.
The petitioner added on September 11, 2007, when a bench of high court was proceeding with the matter of May 12, 2007 carnage, hundreds of people entered the court and disturbed the work.
Kazmi concluded his petition that such an incident can reoccur and the responsible quarters be directed to provide foolproof security to judges.
