The 112th Annual Sports of Government College University Lahore (GCU) on Friday kicked off with a grand inaugural ceremony at the University Ground. About 3000 of its students from 26 departments took part in the ceremony marked by a grand march past, sports day oath and athletics meet. Institute of Bio-technology bagged the prestigious trophy of the Best March Past Contingent while Department of English was adjudicated second. In his message on the annual sports, GCU Vice Chancellor Prof (Meritorious) Dr Muhammad Khaleeq-ur-Rahman said that sports make students better human beings and instil in them the leadership qualities. βIt teaches tolerance and encourages the spirit of competitiveness,β he added.
The VC said further that GCU is made one of the finest sports nurseries for producing and grooming sportsmen for national teams. He advised the students never to compromise on the standards of sportsmanship.
The Musicians hailing from GCU Nazir Ahmed Music Society (NAMS) this year presented a special anthem for the 112th GCU Athletics Meet. The first of three days annual sports event was marked by 800m race which was won by Geography Department student Wasim Sajid by covering the distance in 2:05:78 seconds. Sadique Akbar came victorious in 3000m race. In 200m race, Tariq Mehmood, a student of Intermediate, secured the first position with his impressive timing of 22:00 seconds. Long Jump event was won by Adnan Jahangir. Saad Ali Hassan of Urdu Department bagged the Gold Medal in shot put as the distance was measured up to 9.70m. Department of Urdu Department student Moshin Naveed brought victory to his department in 110m hurdles race.
GCU Sports Board Chairman Prof Dr Ikramul Haq and GCU Director Sports Prof Khadim Ali Khan also addressed the opening ceremony.
