Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran on Friday resolved to fight out the menace of terrorism that has plagued the people of the three countries, with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad calling foreign interference the reason for all problems in the region, saying the “seeds” of regional problems had been sowed from “outside” to keep the region backward.
“All the problems we are facing today in the region are coming from the outside. In order to promote their goals and ambitions … they don’t want to allow our nations to develop,” the Iranian president told reporters at a joint press conference with President Asif Ali Zardari and Afghan President Hamid Karzai after the conclusion of the third trilateral summit.
“There are countries that are determined to dominate our region. And they have targeted our region for their domination and hegemony,” he said. “We should deny others the opportunity to interfere in our affairs.”
Ahmadinejad stressed that the problems of the region must be resolved regionally and the trilateral meeting was a step to achieve that goal.
A source said that during the meeting with his Iranian counterpart, President Asif Ali Zardari had assured Ahmadinejad of Pakistan’s support against any foreign aggression, besides committing that Islamabad would not allow its bases to be used by the US forces if Iran was attacked.
A joint declaration issued after the summit said the three states would not allow any threat emanating from their respective territories against each other. “All parties agreed to commence trilateral consultations on an agreement in this regard”.
NO PRESSURE: About the Iran-Pakistan pipeline, President Zardari said no pressure from the US was acceptable and the project would be completed against all odds. Following a refusal by India to join the project, Pakistan said it would try to bring in China or Bangladesh to be part of the project.
It was learnt that Iran offered Pakistan to double the gas supply through the pipeline from 750 million cubic feet to 1.5 billion cubic feet daily by laying the pipeline with a double capacity, besides offering low cost gas.
To a question on international pressure for not materialising the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project, President Zardari said Islamabad was lobbying the world and its viewpoint had been looked at and accepted.
“Our bilateral relationship cannot be considered or undermined by any international pressure of any kind,” he said, sending a clear message to the US administration about his commitment towards the pipeline project.
He also rubbished the impression that Pakistani forces were involved directly or indirectly with militants in Afghanistan and said, “There might be some elements in the country that are a residue of the Soviet war and could be blamed for militancy. There are billions of dollars of drug trade going on in Afghanistan and they might be using the illicit money. We can’t deny that,” he said.
Zardari said time and again he had called on the US to pay attention to this matter. He said terrorism was a challenge shared by the three countries who had suffered due to this menace.
“I personally suffered a loss,” the president said while referring to the assassination of his wife Benazir Bhutto, adding, “Still, no one would tell me who the financer of Baitullah Mahsud was.” Zardari said no one could deny that there were people from both sides who were involved in militancy. “This is a world problem … they have left the baby with us.”
President Karzai said the dialogue had been fruitful and all three countries were working together. He called the tripartite meeting “future-oriented” that had helped focus on recognition of opportunities and formulation of an actionable and implement-able policy to act upon.
“Any impediments in the way of regional cooperation would be removed.”
Ahmadinejad called President Zardari and Karzai brothers, saying they were determined to work out a mechanism for regional cooperation.
“We are here to strengthen and solidify cooperation among the three countries. We are going to move from words to deeds for removing the problems,” he added.
He said the three countries had the resources to face the challenges as they had large lands, talented human resource and rich humanitarian culture.
“InshaAllah, we are going to witness very good progress in our countries.”
Asked about his country’s nuclear programme, President Ahmadinejad called for going beyond the issue in building relations between nations.
“Nuclear bombs should be deleted from the world as they are not a capability to be used. Our relations with Pakistan and its people are not for nuclear bombs, rather, these are based on building the future of our people,” he said, adding that Pakistanis were a brave nation.
“We are shaking our hands to achieve this. We have great hopes of victory in future.”
He regretted that due to tight schedule of the summit, he could not interact with the people of Pakistan and assured that he would do so in his next bilateral visit.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari, President Hamid Karzai and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad inked the document of Joint Communiqué at the end of the two-day third trilateral summit, aimed at enhancing regional cooperation.
