Pakistan Wetlands Programme (WWF ) on Wednesday hosted an event to conclude the celebrations of two-week long activities at Islamabad College for Girls (ICG) F-6/2 to commemorate World Wetlands Day. Federal Secretary of Capital Administration and Development Division Imtiaz Inayat Ellahi was the chief guest. World Wetlands Day is celebrated across the globe each year to mark the date of adoption of international convention on wetlands. This year, the World Wetlands Day celebrations were focused on the theme ‘wetlands and tourism’ with a slogan ‘Wetlands Tourism: a great experience and opportunity to celebrate the value of wetlands and tourism’. This has been designed to create a sense of awareness about the role of wetland tourism in our environment. Wetland tourism has benefits both locally and nationally for people and wildlife – such as stronger economies, sustainable livelihoods, healthy people and thriving ecosystems – an ideal time to start thinking about this precious source. The celebrations began on February 2, 2012, by holding arts, poetry, and story writing competitions among students from different schools, colleges and universities in Islamabad. These celebrations continued throughout the two weeks with a grand closure on February 15 at the Islamabad Girls College.
