Karo-kari, women’s marriage to the holy Quran and other such oppressive customs are a blot on the face of the society, said Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee (RC) member Nasreen Jalil while addressing a press conference at the Bagh-e-Quaid.
Flanked by RC member Mumtaz Anwer, Women Wing in-charge Kishwar Zehra, Member National Assembly Khushbakht Shujaat, Senator Shirala Mallick and other MQM office-bearers, Jalil said the party’s upcoming public meeting in Karachi with the theme ‘Empowered Women, Strong Pakistan’ would go a long way in emancipating women from oppressive laws and social customs.
She said the MQM has united women on a platform and enabled them to play their role in the progress and development of the country.
Women constitute over 52 percent of the population and their role cannot be ignored, she added.
She also said, “Evil practices of the days of ignorance are common here and women are falling victim to karo-kari, honour-killing and vani. Religious extremism and intolerance are weakening Pakistan. The need of the hour is to promote harmony and tolerance for saving the country from collapsing.”
She further said her party has created an awakening in women and it is actively working for abolishing the black laws against them.
“The society that demeans its women is ultimately destroyed. I appeal to women to participate in the public meeting in large numbers and make it a historic success,” she added.
