There are many nongovernmental organisations helping the flood-hit people of Sindh live a normal life again, but the Sindh Radiant Organisation (SRO) has come with innovative ideas to achieve this task.
In collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and GEF Small Grants Programme, the SRO has started a skill development project in Badin district in selected villages.
Under the three-month long initiative, 240 youths would be given driving lessons and licences after they are trained, in addition to course stipend in cash, so that they can start earning their livelihood.
“We are also arranging training sessions for 160 people on cell phone repairing. They would also be provided with mobile repairing tool kits and wooden shops,” said Ghulam Hussain of the SRO.
He said that the project will be implemented in the union councils of Garo, Ahmed Rajo, Bhugra Memon, Qadi Qazia and Sirani of Badin district.
“In the first phase of the project, 55 youths have been trained and the remaining will start their courses soon,” he added.
“The trained drivers will get a license and tool kits will be provided to the trained beneficiaries in the field of mobile set repairing. The people trained in mobile set repairing will be provided wooden shops. The provision of tool kit, driving licence and skill development trainings will equip the flood affected communities with vocational skills, so that they can earn their bread and butter with dignity.”
