The Pakistan Muslim League (PML)-Likeminded on Saturday elected former Sindh chief minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim as its new president, while Hamid Nasir Chattha retained his position as the party’s chairman for a second term.
The elections were held in a meeting of the party’s General Council attended by councillors from all four provinces. The meeting was held was held under Senator Salim Saifullah Khan to elect new party leadership for the next three years. Outgoing PML-Likeminded president Senator Salim Saifullah has been elected as the chairman of the party’s Steering Committee after the position was vacated by Khurshid Qasuri who defected to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In a country where no one quits crucial party positions, Saifullah has set a rare example by giving way to Arbab Ghulam Rahim at the end of his tenure.
The PML-Likeminded was set up in 2009 in reaction to the re-election of PML-Quaid President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain for a second consecutive term in violation of the party’s constitution. Humayun Akhtar Khan has been re-elected as the secretary general of the party, while Kashmala Tariq was elected as information secretary.
