Pakistan Today

One step at a time

Finally, the focal point of all major players in Afghanistan has shifted from military operation to the peace process and talks about ‘the talks’ are making headlines. Talks between the Taliban and the Americans have begun while the Karzai government has taken an initiative on its own after being jilted by the Americans to resume the reconciliation process that had been brought to a halt after the killing of Burhanuddin Rabbani. Hopes of immediate success, however, would be premature as it may take the entire 2012 to just get aligned with the concept of talking. But the fact that all stakeholders have shown a sign of acceptance for the process is surely a positive indicator and provides some hope for the future.

This peace process would be more beneficial if a piecemeal approach is adopted. Instead of waiting for US-led miracles for a peaceful end, the Afghans must start taking responsibility of their own affairs. By setting short-term achievable objectives, the Afghan government ought to move towards a peaceful end to the insurgency.
