The judicial commission, set up to inquire into deaths caused by spurious medicines at Punjab Institute of Cardiology’s (PIC), will begin its proceedings from February 13 (Monday). According to a notification, the commission will comprise of Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan whereas District and Sessions Judge Irfan Saeed will perform duties of the registrar of the commission.
The judicial commission will complete the inquiry within thirty days and submit report to the government. It will determine elements responsible for the negligence and suggest measures to stop such incidents in the future. Lahore High Court Chief Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed constituted the commission after being approached by the punjab government. The government through an application requested that a commission be set up to probe the issue and suggest measures to stop such incidents in the future.
Compensation for victims: Justice Umer Ata Bandial of the Lahore High Court on Thursday sought reply from Punjab government on a petition seeking directions to pay Rs500,000 compensation to each of the victims families that lost their lives in the spurious medicines imbroglio in Punjab Institute of Cardiology and other hospitals. The judge was hearing a petition filed by Muhammad Azhar Siddique chairman judicial activism penal, a public litigation company.
Chief justice Lahore High Court Sheikh Azmat Saeed on Thursday summoned for Feb 15 the Attorney General of Pakistan for his assistance in proceedings on a petition seeking a restraining order against the senate elections.
The petition was filed by AK Dogar advocate contending that present assemblies were not reliable as bogus votes were cast in the last elections and if senate elections are held now it will not be a representative election. He said according to NADRA records 30.71 million votes are bogus in the voters lists. He said under article 218 and 219 of the constitution, elections must be transparent but he questioned how they can be transparent if bogus votes are cast. He requested the court to issue directives to stop the senate election till the next General elections after a new voters lists are prepared as per the SC order. The CJ observed that it is a constitutional matter and AGP will be summoned for assistance on it.
