Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq was awarded the Padmore Medal at the conclusion of the Pakistan – England Test series. The medal is awarded to the player who, in the opinion of the team coaches, has contributed in a special and memorable way that has been pivotal to his team’s success. Andy Flower and Mohsin Khan determined that the medal should go to Misbah to cap off a great day and a great series for the Pakistan captain, who led the side to a first-ever clean sweep in the history of series between the two countries, dating back to 1954. The medal is named after Robert Padmore, who passed away whilst supporting the England cricket team on its tour of Pakistan in 2005. A dedicated member of England supporters group the Barmy Army, Robert was a regular follower of the England team, having visited all the Test-playing countries, many more than once.
Known by his many friends around the world as “the ultimate cricket fan,” Robert was also instrumental in re-establishing a cricket team in his home village of Baston in Lincolnshire. The medal was presented at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai Sports City by Mr Padmore’s parents, Terry and Gwen Padmore. The first recipient, in 2006, was Monty Panesar and in 2010 it was awarded to Eoin Morgan. The Padmore family will also mark the presentation of the medal by making a donation to an appropriate cricket-related charity.
