The Punjab Health Department has finally transferred King Edward Medical University (KEMU) Oncology Professor Dr Shehryar over his allegedly “controversial” remarks regarding hijab, Pakistan Today has learnt. The professor got into hot waters after he made some remarks about basic Islamic principles, including hijab, which started a controversy at the campus especially infuriating female students, who started a campaign against the doctor and filed a written application with the KEMU pro-VC for his removal. The pro-VC initially tried to resolve the matter but then wrote to the health department over “sensitivity” of the matter. A group of MBBS 4th year students, the same class in which the comments were made, met the health secretary to transfer the controversial professor to avoid any untoward incident at the varsity.
The Health Department on Tuesday transferred the said professor to Services Institute of Medical Sciences. Talking to Pakistan Today, KEMU Pro-VC Dr Asad Aslam confirmed that the Health Department has directed to relieve Shehryar of his duties and will now be posted at SIMS. He said that posting in SIMS depends upon the availability of seats otherwise the professor will be finally repatriated to the health department for further posting.
