A delegation of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES) visited Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) here on Thursday. During a meeting with PIDE Vice Chancellor Dr Rashid Amjad, both the sides agreed to jointly collaborate and work together in tackling the serious challenges of unemployment and deteriorating jobs market in Pakistan. After the meeting a get-together was arranged for the delegation which was attended by all the faculty members.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rashid Amjad, warmly welcomed the guests and acknowledged their continued collaboration with the PIDE. He said the two sides in their interaction discussed some projects for future collaboration like exchange of scholars and research on the new economy paradigm. “Though the economic situation is not so good in Pakistan, we can tackle the situation through some positive steps like food sufficiency, resilience of the people and drive for entrepreneurship”, he said.
He also offered the German scholars and academics to visit the PIDE for short durations and take advantage of its expertise and research in various fields of economics. On the other hand, Jurgen Stetten, Head of Department for Asia and the Pacific Division for International Cooperation, while speaking on the occasion appreciated the research work in different fields of economics by young economists and scholars associated with the PIDE.
Talking about the inflation rate, he said: “The rate of increase in wages is below the inflation rate in Pakistan, and I believe it’s a serious issue that requires immediate attention.” The FES is a German political non-profit oriented public-interest institution that regularly supports PIDE’s research activities.
