Around 25 years ago, my father had to go to the UK for training while he was on a government engineering job. He told me a very interesting incident that had happened there which highlights how our society and the British society differ in their thinking.
My father said that while training there, his senior engineer took him to a reported incident site. A recently constructed tunnel had developed cracks in its infrastructure. While inspecting my father asked the head engineer how the investigation would proceed.
The head engineer replied that after thorough inspection of the infrastructure, we would figure out why the cracks first happened and then figure out an alternative method, equipment and material to fix the problem for the future, then we would fix this area and incorporate the solution for our future projects.
Seeing my father’s confused look, the head engineer inquired how the investigation would proceed in Pakistan. My father replied, “We will first find out who made the infrastructure and then we will decide how to punish him.”
The recent incident of 130 heart patients dying in the PIC hospital due to a dangerous batch of heart medicine and how it was portrayed in the media just highlights my first point, that even after 25 years we are still doing the same thing we did before, only now we use the internet, cable TV and new tools.
