A 90-year old man, who came to Islamabad from Gujranwala to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, was arrested by police on Tuesday from the Red Zone, about a mile away from the President House. Muhammad Sharif, who wanted to deliver a sermon to the President on Islamisation in the country, was arrested near Radio Pakistan’s building and was shifted to the Secretariat police station. Sharif said he was an Islamic scholar and wanted to meet President Zaradari to convince him to enforce Islamic laws in the country.
“I have been preaching about Islamic law for the past many years, but to no avail. I thought I should approach President Zardari as he, being the head of the state can impose Islamic Shariah,” he added. Later, the police set Sharif free and directed him to leave the Red Zone. “After questioning him, we found him to be innocent. He was released after being convinced that the President does not entertain requests for unscheduled meetings,” said Tanveer Ahmed Secretariat Police Station Duty Officer.
