A group of Congressmen here has sought US citizenship for jailed Pakistani doctor Shakeel Afridi, who helped CIA track down killed al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden last year.

A Congressional legislation has been introduced in the US House of Representatives seeking the citizenship for the doctor, who is currently in a Pakistani jail for “treason”.

“Today I have introduced legislation to grant American citizenship to Dr Shakeel Afridi, the Pakistani medical doctor who risked his life to identify Osama Bin Laden and help US military forces bring him to justice,” Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said yesterday.

“If convicted, he could be executed,” the lawmaker from California pointed out.

“The bill would grant him US citizenship and send a direct and powerful message to those in the Pakistani government
and military who protected the mastermind of 9/11 and are now seeking retribution on those who helped execute Bin Laden,” Rohrabacher said in the House of Representatives.

The Afridi citizenship bill has been endorsed by more than a dozen top Congressmen including Bill Posey, Ted Poe and Roscoe Bartlett.

  1. Let him become a US citizen and then execute him. It would send a very powerful message to the US that the door swings both ways. Remember Dr. Aafia who is in US custody for crimes she did not commit?

  2. Identifying a terrorist is no crime/ treason. Osama Bin Laden was a wanted terrorist as per UN Security Council resolutions. Dr. Afridi helped identified the man as was required by UN. Pakistan is signatory to UN resolutions. Dr. Afridi should be released immediately….

  3. Being on the payroll of a foreign spy agency in your own country and providing them information that would result in invasion of that country by foreign forces would be considered treason. He should have passed on any information he had to ISI.

  4. Congressmen, very sad. You have just signed the poor doctor's death warrant.

What an unwise and foolish step!

Could US congressmen do such a thing? This stance is against the position taken by US government and justifies Pakistan's position on OBL.

    • This is not how I convey my displeasure. I never disrespectfully address any one. Besides choosing to use my pen- name you are not doing any justice to yourself.
