The Supreme Court was moved on Friday to suspend the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)’s notification of holding by-elections on February 25, 2012 on vacant seats of the National Assembly and provincial assemblies.
The civil miscellaneous application was filed in the apex court by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, stating that the apex court had passed an order on January 19, 2012 wherein the ECP was restrained from holding by-elections on the vacant seats on the basis of polluted electoral rolls containing some 37 million unverified votes. He said despite the February 25 restraining order, which was passed in very clear and unambiguous terms and in the presence of the respondent – the ECP secretary – the commission notified on January 27 that the by-elections would be held on February 25.
He said it was evident that the ECP secretary was going to hold the by-elections on the basis of the same polluted voter lists containing a large number of unverified votes, which was illegal.
Khan stated that holding by-elections on the basis of known bogus voter lists would amount to a negation of the right of vote, rule of law and spirit of democracy. “The issuance of January 27 notification by the Election Commission in the absence of new corrected and verified voter lists amounts to disobedience of the court’s order passed on January 19, 2012,” said the application, and requested the court to suspend the January 27 notification of the ECP and restrain it from holding the by-elections on the basis of polluted voter lists.
Despit of the efforts of previous regimes so far ECP has not been able to get it straight. All over the country the bogus voters list will be a challenge to have a fair election. I hope the Supreme Court suspends the notification and give enough time to the concerned departments to correct the voters listand than have the by-elections. In the 77 elections my dad's very close buddy won the elections in his home constituency by more votes than the population of that area. It was ajoke and later the results were nullified. I will just say," Peuvesta rah shajar say umeed bahar rakh". Come on ECP and do the neccessary SC. Lets hope for the best. PTI will win the general elections and hopefully put the country on the right path. Self Sufficient.
