In their careers, Elton John, Whitney Houston and Celine Dion have given us many feel-good tunes, but some of their biggest hits rank high in a new poll of the most depressing songs of all time. According to the UK paper The Telegraph, the British survey was conducted by theatrical producer David King, in order to discover more about what he described as “the power of music.” Topping the list was R.E.M.’s ‘Everybody Hurts’, followed by Elton’s ‘Candle in the Wind.’ We assume the voters were referring to the 1997 version of the song, which was a tribute to the late Princess Diana.
Coming in at number 3 was the tearjerker ‘The Living Years’ by Mike and the Mechanics, followed by Whitney’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ at number 4. Celine’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’ is number 7 on the ranking. Other songs which made the list of depressing tunes include ‘Nothing Compares 2 U,’ ‘Without You,’ ‘All By Myself,’ ‘Yesterday,’ ‘My Way,’ ‘The Sound of Silence,’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’ and Terry Jacks’ one-hit-wonder deathbed dirge ‘Seasons in the Sun.’
