Pakistan cricket star Shahid Afridi has been appointed as UNODC Goodwill National Ambassador in recognition of his outstanding sporting record. Afridi is a talented all rounder who has been captain of the Pakistan national team from 2009 to 2011 including ODI, T20 and one day matches. He became an overnight sensation in 1996 when, as a 16-year-old, he made history by scoring the fastest one-day international hundred (ODI) in his very first innings. “Boom-boom” Afridi as he his affectionately known to his legions of fans goes hell for leather, scoring fast instead of contenting himself with preserving his wicket. Afridi will promote healthy living though sports, and positive values and attitudes during visits to schools and colleges. In 2012, he will witness the impact of UNODC work in Pakistan and highlight the need to curb drug use and associated crime.
He is expected to take part in a range of activities – youth cricket tournament, International Day against Drug Abuse (26 June), increased ethics in sports and gender-responsive services for drug users and promotion of awareness of drug and HIV/AIDS issues.
