Paul Castella, the Head of Delegation International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), called on Advisor to Prime Minister on Human Rights Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar here on Tuesday in his office. Ministry of Human Rights Secretary Saeed Ahmed Alvi was also present at the meeting. This is the first ever official meeting of Paul Castella with the adviser since assuming his charge as the head of ICRC delegation in Pakistan.
The adviser appreciated the ICRC for the positive work, specifically for prisoners. He commended the role of ICRC in spreading awareness on international humanitarian laws in Pakistan. He also invited the attention of Paul Castella toward the Pakistani prisoners languishing in the jails of foreign countries despite completing their sentences. The adviser briefed him about international commitments of Pakistan such as Preparation of Universal Periodic Report (UPR), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Convention against Torture (CAT), Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) etc.
He informed him that these conventions had not only been ratified but would also be implemented through domestic legislation. Paul Castella, the head of delegation of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), while appreciating the efforts of the adviser, offered the ministry to identify mutual area of interest and support for improving human rights situation in Pakistan. He assured the adviser of his continuous support and cooperation in the cause of human rights in Pakistan.

Oath taking ceremony of the newly elected representatives of Officers Welfare Association (OWA) of Allama Iqbal Open University would be held on Thursday. All presidents and general secretaries of the sister OWAs of the twin city universities have been invited to participate in the ceremony. All officers of the university will also participate. The election of the association of the Allama Iqbal Open University was held some days ago. Syed Ziaul Hasnain and Malik Tauqir Ahmad Khan were elected unopposed consecutively as vice president and joint secretary. According to the result of the election 2012, Mukhtiar Hussain Talpur was elected president, Abdul Wadood general secretary, Mazhar Hassan Hafeez finance secretary while SM Arshad, Hafeez Shahid Jamil, Mujahid Hussain Nizami, Arifa Salman, Altaf Hussain Memon and Dr Attaulah Shah were elected as executive body members. The Election -2012 was held in a very pleasant and friendly environment.
