The inaugural ceremony of a command control and communication centre was held on Saturday with the cooperation of the European Union (EU). The event was held under the sponsorship of the Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), in which Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was the chief guest. The EU ambassador said 22 modern villages providing basic amenities had been established for the rehabilitation of flood victims at a cost of Rs.1.56 billion. A response force had been formed to meet any disasters in the province.
The ambassador said 1,000 tonnes of food items have to be airlifted to areas such as Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh and the Essa Khel district in Mianwali, as the ground contact system is disconnected because of flooding. He said that land records were being computerised throughout the province so the ‘land-grabbing mafia’ could be eliminated.
