Unrepentant Maya Khan fired!

Maya Khan, a morning show host who earned the ire of people across the country when she accosted ”immoral” couples dating in Karachi’s parks has been fired by her channel, Samaa TV. The channel acted against Maya Khan after she failed to offer an unconditional apology for her show that was criticised by ordinary Pakistanis and media analysts. Scores of people signed petitions asking Samaa to take action against her for harassing dating couples on her show “Subha Savera Maya Khan Ke Saath”.
In response to numerous complaints against Khan over the week, Samaa’s chairman Zafar Siddiqi wrote in an email: “We asked Maya to apologise unconditionally which she did not. The CEO asked her to do that on Friday which she refused”. Siddiqi, also the founder of CNBC Africa and CNBC Pakistan, said Khan and her team would “receive termination notices” on January 30 and her show would be stopped the same day. Khan initially refused to apologise for her show against dating, in which she was seen asking couples to prove they were married by showing their ‘nikahnama’ or marriage certificate. Samaa subsequently aired a formal apology for the show and beamed a short clip in which Khan said she had never intended to hurt anyone. Many noted that Khan had shown no remorse for her actions. She was also quoted by the media as saying that the “elite” who do not watch her show were the ones objecting to it. Media analysts said Khan’s actions were probably driven by the race for ratings among Pakistan’s dozens of TV channels. Some NGOs highlighted the lack of media regulations and said they intended to approach the courts to take action against Samaa TV. Khan invited the wrath of hundreds of Pakistanis when she and her team tried to drill moral sense into young couples dating in parks. She chased couples along with a posse of young and not-so-young women and two “analysts” who gave insight into the dating behaviour of couples and commented on their body language. While most couples made good their escape seeing a horde of women approach them, some countered them bravely. “Do your parents know that you are here?” Maya Khan asked a couple perched on a bench. “Do you know what people think of couples who date like this? Do you know how bad it is for the reputation of girls to be seen like this?” she charged. Samaa chairman Siddiqi said he hoped the action taken by his channel against Khan would settle the issue. But media analysts said the episode had only highlighted the need for self-regulation by Pakistan’s news and entertainment channels.

  8. Well I think that it was a right decisioon though I do not encourage dating couples. But these morning show hosts are more like cartoons can’t watch them for even 5 minutes…they lack sense, good voice quality, personality, subject and most importantly “brains” on how to entaertain the masses…who is interested in dating couples in park woman… Get a life

  31. This is an attempt of ruining people's life by exposing their personal relationship. The worst thing is that she has targeted the average and lower class community couple who cannot afford going to some decent place like all other Media or youngsters go for dating. Indeed, dating or any other unofficial meeting between two is Haram but we are no one to blame someone as Allah is watching everything. If she is courageous and media has power then they should unveil truth and realities of politicians. Everyone in Maya's team including herself was looking desperate and so shameless that they forgot to think of those girls who might have to pay for this for their who lives. They should be sorry to those all couples and their families and should be banned!

  34. great.. There could have been other ways of addressing the social issue… I dont understand how no one from the entire team of the show objected to the idea when it was first put forward…
    I think it was a bad move on the channel's part to gain "cheap publicity"…

  39. People in pakistan are thinking about their jobs, taking care of the family. Challenged by inflation and corrupt government. This lady is interested in catching dating couples. She was wrong in doing that. Morning host show should be done by people who credibility and characters are unmatched and respectable.

    She deserves the nice treatment. I support Zafar Siddiqui action

Firsly Maya khan should see her self first..I saw her outside practical coaching centre karachi where her house is located right opposite to it..she was with Ahmed Jahanzaib the famous Pakistani singer in a diahatsu coure car..and I swear she hugged him and kissed him right infront of her house gate where number of people were walking pass and students of practical centre watched it..I am talking about the year 2002-2003 when I was a student there..so, now she is acting like a shareef shurfa hajjan bi..her pictures are on internet where she is sitting with friends somewhere in hotel and there are alcoholic drinks right infront of them on table..So, how come such double faced people are criticising people who date..tell me honestly who doesn't date ?..ask maya khan to put her hand on Quran and say she never dated anyone ever..so how come something is right for you when it wrong for others..ya to pori shariyat laao phir..ya phir yeh double face mat bano..sirf show ki TRP berhanay k lye sastay ochay hatkanday..buhat acha hua isko fire kia..she deserves that..Kisi ko kisi ki private life mai jhanknay ka koi haq nahi..Zameen pe khuda mat bano..

  52. Maya Khan is a morning show host. She has no right to ask people in parks their credentials. Her intention was to get more importance in media . . . no one goes to park in the morning with nikahnama. Creating panic, offending the people, insulting their relationship, abusing her status are some of Maya Khan's self assigned duties . . . she and other hosts must stop doing so . . . most of us are part of responsible society

Hahahha… Maya khan, i saw her pics on internet, there are number of others pics even i have which i took in different dance parties where she is wearing dresses like a slut, Maya Khan you still gotta pay for it and soon i will upload those pics too of your Miss BH Maya Khan. you are now gone, now you, your family will be paying for this act, and if you have kids so they will be shamed to be birth by you coz you are a slut, and if you dont have kids so my advice for you to not to birth a kids coz they will be paying for your stupid act..

  57. a very wise decision by the TV channel. i also request other channel not to hire her as she is a potential threat to tv channel's reputation. i seriously decided not to watch samaa tv after the episode was aired. but after the wise decision i am happy and will watch start watching samaa tv.

    i agree with Mr Hanif that she should look into her past history.

  62. I am not defending Maya Khan, but I think Samaa TV is equally responsible for showing the whole stuff. Why didn't the Channel review the program first before taking it on air. So what if Maya Khan is fired, did Samaa take the responsibility and apologize for showing it?

  64. Well done. Not just morning programs, all tv programs should be monitored by some governing authority. Because about 70% of our tv programs on all the channels, including talk shows, morning shows and discussion on news; are all full of nonsense and the people conducting these shows are unqualified and irresponsible in most of the cases. So this calls for a strong check on all tv channels. Wake up PEMRA, you have done nothing yet to justify your existence.

  69. i still remember she used to come on PTV as a host in 2000…and by that time there was only 3 pakistani channels. she had such a annoying personality and I have no other option to turn off my TV..!!!

This is really good to see that Social Media and Social Society are rising to events and now like a vibrant society we can have a voice and we can be a pressure group… a pressure group who knows what is right and what is wrong and will not be fed by stupid ladies pulling off morning stunts like Shaista Wahidi Kissing Snake or this Maya Khan chasing and harassing people in public parks. Now many many more will be embarking upon their old habits and will definitely take a good consideration before doing something stupid, immature and immoral.

  75. I condemn this action.. she was very great anchor.. I watched he show in which she visited park.. it was normal show and i have seen many shows like this on Pakistani Channels. Dont know whats wrong with us. I will miss her untill she come on any other TV channel
