Youth’s role vital for road safety: IGP

The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) was endeavoring to ensure safe road environment in the city, involving youth to achieve the desired targets of disciplined traffic with zero tolerance for violation of rules, Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Bani Amin Khan said on Thursday.
The IGP was addressing at the concluding ceremony of the road safety quiz competition ‘How to Drive’ arranged by ITP, in collaboration with the Pak Suzuki Company Limited, in connection with its 6th anniversary at the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA).
IGP Bani Amin said that the purpose of arranging the contest was to maintain close links with students and promote friendly policing culture with them as they were the assets of the nation.
He said, “Young people are our real assets and their hard work can ensure bright future for the country. Education is the key to success and every challenge can be countered with hard work and sincere approach in life.”
The IGP expressed satisfaction over the performance of ITP, adding that the force had succeeded in ensuring safe road environment in the city within a very short span of time.
He urged the young students to avoid one wheeling, driving motor bike without silencers, rash driving and help ITP to check such violations.
He said that he attends an ITP FM radio programme on regular basis and listens to the problems of the citizens for their immediate solution. The IGP said that the elimination of VIP culture and equal implementation of law were the operational codes of the ITP and excellent planning and strategy regarding traffic management had also helped in reducing the number of fatal and non-fatal road accidents in the previous years.
The road safety quiz competition, ‘How to Drive’, saw the participation of 30 students from several educational institutions of the twin cities. The competition comprised of two parts, oral and practical.
Nine students of three universities, Air University, Riphah University and Iqra University, passed these tests and qualified for the final quiz round held at the PNCA.
The Iqra University students achieved the first position in the final contest, while the Ripah University and Air University received the second and third positions, respectively. The IGP presented awards to the winning teams.
Security Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Dr Mujeeb-ur-Rehman, Traffic Superintendent Police (SSP) Dr Moeen Masood, Traffic Superintendent Police (SP) Mir Vais Niaz, ITP Program Coordinator Ayesha Jameel, Pak Suzuki Company Limited General Manager Aamir Shafi and students and principals from several educational institutions also attended the ceremony.
