Commuters strongly protested against increase in fares by van owners on the route from Jorian to Chungi No 22.
The fare fixed by the RTA secretary stands at Rs 35, but transporters are charging Rs 50. They have unilaterally enhanced the fare. A lot of government employees daily go to, and return from, Rawalpindi and this sort of extortion by the van drivers has made it difficult for them to pay the fare. The low-paid employees can only go to Rawalpindi, but cannot return home due to this enhancement in the fare.
“The traffic police and other authorities are keeping mum over it,” complained a government employee on the condition of anonymity.
The commuters demanded immediate action against the wagon owners found involved in overcharging them.
