Four men, including two government officials, were killed in the provincial capital late on Wednesday.
Police officials said two unidentified armed motorcyclists opened indiscriminate firing on a car on Mechongy Road in the centre of the city using automatic weapons, killing all three occupants of the car. When contacted, Quetta SP Mohammad Tariq said that according to witnesses, the two assailants were masked and fled soon after killing the men. Tariq said since all three victims were Shias, he suspected it to be a case of sectarian killing. However, he said investigations to ascertain the real motive behind the incident were underway. The victims were identified as FIA Inspector Walayat Hussain, Accountant General Office accounts officer Anwar Ali and a well-known TV actor Abid Hussain.
After hearing about the killings, a large crowd rushed towards Civil Hospital. Many of them were said to be armed with sophisticated weapons. The mob blocked the main Jinnah Road and shopkeepers had to pull down their shutters for the fear of being attacked and their shops ransacked. The protesters remained on the roads for about an hour and later took the bodies in a procession under heavy police security. Police cordoned off the area and beefed up security while a search operation had also been started. In another incident, unidentified assailants shot dead a man in Nawa-e-Kill, in the outskirts of Quetta. Police said the victim Alam Khan was on his way home when he was targeted by the assailants and the murder could be the result of enmity.
