Accepting a plea to enquire into the death of four out of 11 missing prisoners who had been allegedly picked up by intelligence agencies from outside the Adyala Jail following their release in 2010, the Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a reply from the attorney general over the matter by January 30. The court also issued notices to other respondents, including the defence secretary, directors general of the Inter-Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence, Judge Advocate General (JAG) Department and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa advocate general.
A three-member bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez was hearing a petition filed by Ruhaifa, the mother of three of the prisoners. During the hearing, the chief justice expressed concerns over the death of four missing prisoners and asked the attorney general that the matter should be probed keeping in view its seriousness. The applicant’s counsel Tariq Asad told the court that he had a video of those prisoners who were killed by torture. He said three bodies of missing prisoners were found in hospitals but the last body was found in a forest near Peshawar. The attorney general requested the court to allow some time for getting details from relevant authorities. The court then adjourned the hearing until January 30.
