Pakistan on Wednesday rejected media reports suggesting that it was responsible for the current impasse in the Conference on Disarmament. Some media reports quoted UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warning on Tuesday that the UN Conference on Disarmament could fail because of a three-year stalemate over Pakistan’s reluctance to discuss nuclear power. “The future of the conference is in the hands of member states,” Ban said, urging the immediate start of nuclear negotiations, according to a report.
The report said citing national security, Pakistan has since May 2009 balked at implementing a work programme established by the UN conference, blocking the resumption of nuclear talks. “In response to a question about news reports concerning the current impasse in the Conference on Disarmament (CD), the Foreign Office spokesman said Pakistan attached immense importance to the work of the CD as the sole multilateral forum for arms control and disarmament negotiations,” a Foreign Office statement said.
The spokesman said Pakistan, along with several other countries, was of the firm view that the CD should have a balanced approach and pursue all items on its agenda, taking into account the well-established principle of equal and undiminished security for all states.
The UN, USA, EU and all others must recognize Pakistan as a Nuclear Weapon State.
