IHC disposes of petition on police recruitment

Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddique of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday disposed of the case filed by some low rank officials of Islamabad Police against the delay in results of the test conducted for the posts of assistant sub-inspectors, lady constables, constables and lady sub-inspectors, after the legal counsel of police presented the result of said test before the court.
Around 30 police officials, who appeared in the tests held in 2009, had filed a joint petition against the more than two years delay in announcement of result, after which the court sought lists of successful candidates from the police.
On Wednesday, Islamabad Police’s legal counsel presented the lists of successful candidates before the court. In the list of successful candidates, some petitioners were also included but the legal counsel informed the court that the successful candidates could not be appointed because the Interior Ministry had slashed the available posts.
Earlier, the petitioners through Zulfiqar Ahmad Bhutta Advocate submitted before the court that they were facing lot of difficulties because of being lower grade officials, therefore, they appeared for the tests and interviews, but the result had been announced yet, adding that there was every likelihood of their success in the selection process.
They contended that they were anxiously waiting for final result, but they came to know through different sources that the delay was aimed at compensating and giving quota to some political figures.
The counsel for the petitioners pointed out that crime rate increased alarmingly and the country also suffered a lot due to the political appointments in the law enforcement agencies and the circumstances demanded appointments on merit.
He contended that as the petitioners were not being dealt according to law and their constitution right so their petition under article 199 is competent. He prayed before the court to direct the respondent police department to declare the names of successful candidates on merit that appeared for tests and interviews.
However, the court dispose of their petition while directing the Islamabad police for considering the names of successful candidates for their appointment when the Interior Ministry would announce vacancies again.
