The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has offered voluntary help to the Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) for switching off streetlights early morning in order to conserve energy. Both sides deliberated over various methods of managing and controlling streetlights. The KESC also offered free technical energy audit of Civic Centre and KMC buildings.
In a meeting with the KMC administration, a team of KESC’s Energy Conservation Department reviewed the strategic partnership between the two sides. The KESC also discussed converting lights along streets and at parks to the energy efficient LED lights that would result in a substantial savings of up to 70 percent.
The KESC team also emphasised the need to curtail undue wastage of electricity through streetlights during day time, by using high technology photo sensors to control the power on and off system. By implementing this method, around 30 percent energy can be conserved. Presently, the total load of streetlights as per KESC record stands at 20.32MW. The KESC team briefed KMC officials about the survey reports along with complete details about the streetlights at Corridor I, II and III and the underpasses of Liaquatabad, Gharibabad, Nazimabad and Sohrab Goth. The KMC administration has started working on a feasibility report for the installation of energy efficient streetlights from Hotel Metropole to the Jinnah Terminal at Shahrah-e-Faisal.
The participants of the meeting also decided to install energy-efficient lights as recommended by the KESC at Bagh Ibne Qasim, Shaheed Benazir Park, Bilawal Chowrangi to Sea View and Karachi Gymkhana to the airport. The KESC energy conservation team also held a meeting with Russian Consul General Andrey V Demidov at his consulate to discuss sharing technology for energy conservation, solid waste management and mass transit. Issues relating to global warming were also discussed in detail and both sides agreed that actions must be taken in order to control climate change.
