In order to pay tribute to Dr Ameer-ud-Din, the world-renowned surgeon from Pakistan, the Pakistan Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) Academic Council and the Lahore General Hospital (LGH) on Sunday approved the proposed undergraduate medical college to be named after Dr Ameer-ud-Din.
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), via a letter written two weeks ago to the PGMI Principal and LGH Prof Dr Tariq Salah-ud-Din, asked to rename the proposed medical college. Accordingly, 20 professors from the PGMI and LGH met to decide the college’s name.
According to sources, six names were tabled in the meeting of the Academic Council and the name of Dr Ameer-ud-Din was selected unanimously. The Academic Council referred this name to the Punjab Health Department.
Dr Tariq Salah-ud-Din, presiding over a meeting of senior professors, said that Dr Ameer-ud-Din was serving as senior professor of surgery at the Mayo Hospital at the time of partition. He said that Dr Ameer had rendered great services for the treatment of those who were injured during migration, adding that Dr Ameer was a great philanthropist also.
“Dr Ameer sold out his residence at Gulberg to contribute to the establishment of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at Mayo Hospital,” Dr Tariq said, adding that in the recognition of his services, the government of Pakistan had awarded him with the honour of emeritus professor of surgery. He said that Dr Ameer was considered to be among the top 20 surgeons of the world.
