Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said the Supreme Court (SC) functioned in its own constitutional domain. Addressing a lawyers’ role signing ceremony at the Karachi Registry of Supreme Court, the CJ said the Supreme Court had always worked within the constitutional limits and it was the responsibility of lawyers and every citizen to protect the constitution and to obey the law. He said it was unfortunate that it was the PCO judges that dealt a blow to the constitution in the past. Commenting on the lawyers’ movement, the CJ said the movement was still in progress and that lawyers had struggled for the restoration of democracy and supremacy of constitution. In the ceremony, 23 lawyers, including a female lawyer and two lawyers from Balochistan, were allowed to contest in the Supreme Court. “We welcome the new lawyers. We have played our part of the innings; now, tomorrow belongs to you,” he told the gathering, adding that anyone of them could become the chief justice of Pakistan in the future.

  1. Like asking the Govt to submit a written undertaking that it would never sack the Army chief, come hell or high water. It seems we are back to Zia era when there was a nexus between three "jeems"……. jernail, judge and jamaat.
