The Sindh Bachayo Committee (SBC), an alliance of nationalist parties, has announced a strike throughout the province on January 28 to protest the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s move to table the 20th constitutional amendment bill in the National Assembly for the formation of new provinces.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, SBC leaders Jalal Mehmood Shah, Bashir Khan Qureshi, Dr Qadir Magsi, Ayaz Latif Palijo, Riaz Chandio, Hareef Chandio and Shafi Jamote said the MQM’s bill regarding the formation of new provinces is a conspiracy against Sindh.
“The MQM should clear its position on the issue and apologise to the Sindhi nation,” they said.
The head of the alliance, Jalal Shah, also criticised the Pakistan People’s Party for remaining silent on the issue.
“The SBC has empowered me to coordinate with other parties of Sindh for supporting the strike and I will contact all political parties outside the alliance,” he said.
The SBC includes almost all nationalist parties of the province: the Sindh United Party, the Jeay Sindh Quami Mahaz, the Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party, the Sindh National Front, the Jeay Sindh Mahaz and the Awami Tahreek.
The Sindh National Movement has also announced support for the strike.
