A new technology has been used to lay down a circular drain at the Two Sword Roundabout in Clifton that will help to drain out rainwater accumulated in the area, said Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed.
He said this while visiting the site to inspect the ongoing work on Thursday.
“The road carpeting in the area will be completed in two days after which traffic flow would be restored and in case of rains, no water will accumulate here,” he said. “Development works at Shahrah-e-Iran and Hatim Ali Road will be completed within the next two weeks while installation of streetlights has been already completed.”
On the occasion, KMC Technical Services Director General Altaf G Memon said that for the purpose of swift drainage of rainwater, the Two Sword Roundabout drain was linked with the Nehr-e-Khayyam, as accumulation of four to six feet water was recorded during rains at the roundabout, resulting in major traffic jams and vehicles being stuck in water.
“The project had an estimated cost of Rs 32 million,” he said, adding that the construction and repairing of Shahrah-e-Iran and Hatim Ali Road will be completed by the end of March that would solve the gridlock problems in this area.
The administrator said that Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad is paying special attention on the development and progress of the city and was personally visiting the sites of development works for inspection.
He said the problems being faced by KMC for carrying out development works are being solved and maximum development projects with better planning would be completed in the current financial year.
Syed said the Sindh governor had expressed satisfaction over the laying of circular drain under a new technology.
Meanwhile, KMC Municipal Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan after assuming his charge on Thursday paid a visit to the University Road among other areas of the city with Technical Services Director General Altaf G Memon, Health Services Senior Director and District East Municipal Commissioner Shafiqur Rehman among other officers.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that special attention was being given to cleaning of drains, repairing and construction of roads and solid waste management in the city.
Khan directed the officials concerned to ensure cleanliness on all major corridors and prompt shifting of garbage to the landfill sites. He also issued directives for more greenery and removal of wall-chalking along major roads.
“Karachi is an international city and it is our duty to keep it clean and green. We can improve the image of our city by keeping it clean,” he said.
The KMC municipal commissioner said development works on large scale were started in the city under the leadership of KMC Administrator Syed.
“Repair and construction of roads is underway in different areas and work is being initiated on more underpasses and flyovers,” he said.
Informing that he will pay frequent visits to different areas to check the pace of development works and sanitation conditions, Khan warned that is any negligence was found, the officer concerned will have to face disciplinary action.
