Musharraf likely to delay return to Pakistan ‘due to security concerns’

Former president General (r) Pervez Musharraf came under mounting pressure on Thursday to delay his return from self-imposed exile as he admitted that he would be in danger if he comes back to Pakistan.
Friends and supporters advised Musharraf to put off a homecoming announced between January 27-30 after Islamabad said he would be arrested if he returned. “Party leaders are convinced it is not a suitable time for Musharraf to come to Pakistan,” said Mohammad Ali Saif, Central Secretary for the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), the political party Musharraf founded after being driven out of power in 2008. Aides fear that the civilian government, under massive pressure from the military and the judiciary, may exploit Musharraf’s return to divert attention from a series of crises likely to force early elections within months. “A meeting of the party central executive committee has been summoned on January 25-26 in Dubai to make a final decision. Musharraf will chair the meeting,” Saif added.
APML Senior Vice President Mohammad Amjad confirmed that Musharraf had been advised to postpone but that a final decision was pending. In an interview broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at the same time that Amjad spoke to AFP, Musharraf admitted he would be in danger in Pakistan.
“I do feel endangered. There is a danger certainly, but you take your own protection and then leave things to destiny. Nobody can ensure you 100 percent protection,” he said in what appeared to be a pre-recorded interview. He admitted that his arrest was possible but said he would “like to remain out” of the crisis currently engulfing the government, army and judiciary.
Musharraf faces two court warrants for his arrest – connected to the 2006 death of Akbar Bugti and the 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. “I personally feel he should not come. The current situation is not in his favour and the atmosphere is hostile,” Hamid Nawaz, a former general and Musharraf’s former interior minister, told AFP. He said Musharraf’s fledgling APML was ill-prepared to contest elections and that the former ruler would not be safe in Pakistan. The military has not publicly announced that it would guarantee his safety.

  4. I think he postponed rather than cancelled. (PT poor choice of words).
Gen (Rtd) Musharraf's previous plan was to return on 23rd March 2012. I do not see that being realized either.

  5. Gen Mush you will be well advised to stay out of the country, This country has suffered a lot when you usurped power by unconstitutional means. You keep recounting your economic achievements but in reality they were not as you claim. You destroyed institutions of the country and inducted your military comrades into the civilian departments in hordes. Remember.

You had two constituencies, one military and the other MQM. You installed Eshrat ul Ibad as governor of the province and gave him a free hand to run the province against the wishes of majority sindhis. You did not care whatsoever and handed Karachi to minion Kamal Mustafa who ran Karachi as his fiefdom. You approved carnage of 12th May 2007.

You are in London and your favourite Altaf Hussain is also in London. I am sure Altaf can accommodate you as his counsel in his so called international secreatariat. You both will live rest of your life in London. Altaf is in no mood to go back to Pakistan until booted out from here. After all sword of Damocles is hanging over his head by which I mean case of the murder of Imran Farooq.

    • OBSERVER FROM UK >. you better stay the hell away from even commenting on PAKISTAN.. you talk about what constitutions he break … but you dont knw how well the life of avg pakistani was … it was better than many " CONSTITUTIONAL REGIMES" …
Why do you even bother to write when you are not even living in pakistan… i guess you are a pseudo intellectual who gets his facts from shows run by bias anchors who are on pay roll of different parties. ..

  8. There goes the 'Zalzala'… he's irrelevant in any condition that would prevail in Pakistan today onwards… he's gone.

    • In Pakistan, we dont elect our prime minister and president… they are selected … And only those make it who have American consent along with Army support.

So you never know…. My word… A new govt will be formed by SEPT 2012… it will alst only 10months … then you might see some unexpected faces running the govt.

    • lol…. genius Your CJ took an oath under musharraf.. he was among st the first PCO judges.. So dont you think constitutionally he should not be a CJ at all??? since you talk about constitution … …

  9. Dear General Sahib,

Many of your fair weather friends in Chicago now ( who used to sit with you for portraits to show their closeness to you) now openly think you are a robber and looted the wealth of the country. In fact all Pakistani leaders are chips of the same block- incompetent, crooks, untrustworthy, dishonest, habitual crooks and blah blah. I met Iskandar Mirza as President with stiff neck and haughty head in 1956 and then two months before his death with twisted neck and shaking head in 1970. What a change time wrought on him. Doo gaz zameen na mili koi-e-yar main.

Phitaey hain Mir Khawar koi poshta nahi.

So just quit going back and stop wishful thinking and enjoy your company of your kids. People in Pakistan are not the same now and do not try to fool yourself. You are not De Gaule of Pakistan. Do not listen to sycophants. How Pakistani soil mirror you is well said by Iqbal:
Aur hai teera shuaar, aiene millat aur hai,
Zasht rue sey teeri aeina hai riswa teera ,

    We pray for you

    • Very poignantly put across. Most people forget what time can do to an individual.

"Stiff neck and haughty neck to twisted neck to shaking head".

      May Allah guide us all.

      Ameen. Ameen

  10. Well nice decision for now but General if you really decided to come home then you may have to do a Complete Class-A Level planning, you have to set many things back to their places that you distort them in your Time. Well major portion of your planning will take you to set a lot of old mess rather than to make new things for your new time.
In other words, you have to look in two direction, front and backward and you know its too difficult because Human's have only eyes on front, if you successfully manages this then can be or may be or again may be your Time.

  11. I honestly dont UNDERSTAND the pakistanis living in pakistan using internet…
You all like to dis respect and make fun of people like Gen musharraf, who did much more than many political democratic parties rather DYNASTIES BHUTTOS and nawazs and BUGHTISss…. and are happy with the on going unprecedented corruption and constitutional upholding that is leading only to inflation and sabotage of economy…

I guess till we dont change our mind sets, we deserve Presidents like Zardaris and Pms like Gillani … CJ CH iftikar ( PCO judge Btw) and oppositions like PML N … i will be out of this country this year…. PAKISTAN KA ALLAH he Hafiz!
