Yesterday marked the end of one of the biggest sporting events held at the Lahore University of Management of Sciences (LUMS) – the LUMS Sports Fest 2012 – as almost 800 athletes from across the country packed their bags to head home.
The event was organised by the society Sports at LUMS (SLUMS), in collaboration with the LUMS Department of Sports, Wellness and Recreation (SWR). Various sports were included in the four-day event, including cricket, futsal, netball, basketball, tennis, table tennis and badminton. It was extremely encouraging to see participation in great numbers by the female athletes at the LSF’12.
Futsal: The Karachi University FC took away the first prize, while DiyaWFC and the Lahore School of Economics (LSE) were the first and second runners-up, respectively. The female footballers put up a great performance, drawing a larger crowd than the male football matches. In the over-18 males’ category, LSE, Young Stars and CBM clinched the top three positions. In the under-18 category, the Edwards College, Peshawar stayed at the top.
Volleyball: The FNL bagged the first prize among the male volley players. The runners-up were Volley 73 and LSE. The girls from FAST-NU and UCL played the final match where FAST-NU grabbed the top spot, while the LGS Defence team was the second runner-up.
Cricket: Unfortunately, there were no female cricket teams. In the over-18 males’ category, LSE remained the favourite and grabbed the top prize. The Spirtives and Acines were first and second runners-up, respectively. In the under-18 category for cricket, Roots DHA, Desert Eagles and BDC 1 bagged the top three positions.
Tennis: Waleed achieved the first position in the over-18 category. While Talha and Noor Haider won the first and second runners-up position, respectively. In the under-18 category, Salman Bin Salim from Roots, Imaad Amir from GCU and Izazuddin from BDC won the top three positions. There were no female tennis players in the competition.
Badminton: In the over-18 females’ category, Fariha and Arooj from Kinnaird College were first and second, while Anum from FAST-NU was third. UCP’s Hafiz Irfan clinched the top position in the over-18 males’ category, while Adil Haseeb and Amaar Saeed were first and second runners-up, respectively.
The SLUMS team ensured that the participants were thoroughly entertained after the sports events. The Social Events Team had arranged a Chill Zone on the first day, where the participants could play Xbox, foozeball, cards or just watch TV.
The LSF’12 hosted the first ever Quratulain Baloch concert at LUMS. EP and Moen Jo Daro also performed and made it an unforgettable night as the audience of over 1,000 young boys and girls swayed to the music. For the third night of the fest, a carnival themed ‘The Wild West’ was arranged, with food and game stalls and lucky draws for the guests.
On the fourth day, a Casino Royale-themed dinner was arranged for the closing ceremony. SLUMS Patron Dr Ali Khan, Punjab Athletic Association General Secretary Salman Butt and Punjab Netball Association President Shehryar Ali were present at the awards ceremony. Shields and trophies were handed out to the winners and the runners-up. The trophy for the overall winners in over-18 males’ category went to LSE and for the under-18 category to Roots, Rawalpindi. The LGS 1A1 won the trophy for the overall winner among the females.
