The civil society of Karachi extended its support to the Sindh University Teachers Association (SUTA) on Wednesday in its demand of dismissing the varsity’s vice chancellor (VC), and decided to hold a demonstration in front of the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on Friday (tomorrow).
This was announced at the KPC during a press conference that was addressed by the civil society’s Saeed Baloch and Asad Butt, SUTA’s Dr Azhar Ali Shah and Arfana Mallah, and Karachi University Teachers Society’s Dr Riaz.
The teachers’ bodies and other civil society representatives condemned the assassination of Prof Bashir Ahmed Channar at the University of Sindh-Jamshoro, and demanded the government to remove Vice Chancellor Dr Nazir Mughal.
They also demanded constituting a judicial commission to probe the assassination of Channar, removing Rangers personnel from the campus, put a ban on student wings of political parties, and restore student unions.
They said a consultation of civil society representatives, academicians, political leaders, student unions and trade unions was held before the press conference at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan’s office, where they demanded the governor, also the chancellor of public universities in the province, to resolve all the problems of the Sindh University.
They demanded arresting the killers of Channar and restoring normalcy at the campus.
Civil society representatives expressed concern over increasing cases of violence at Jamshoro’s varsity, revealing the grim situation of the academic environment, which is being ruined by miscreants.
