Ignoring all the voices raised against the alleged corruption and irregularities committed by the Dr Mujahid Kamran, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s nomination of Kamran as the VC has not taken well by the teachers’ community at the Punjab University, who are terming it a ‘biased decision’. According to educationists instead of taking up the issues of Kamran’s irregularities, the CM had finalised his name and this decision would not bode well for the varsity. The education community was shocked on Tuesday after the nomination of Dr Mujahid Kamran, who according to ASA was involved in serious nature of academic corruption.
It is important to mention here that CM Punjab on Tuesday sent a summary to the Governor’s Secretariat which stated that Dr Mujahid Kamran’s name was final among the three final candidates including PU IAS former head Dr Zafar Iqbal Jadoun and Garrison University VC Dr Jamil Anwer. It is pertinent to mention here that the CM is a competent authority to appoint VCs at public sector universities of the province and after the summary returns from the Governor’s Secretariat, it will be sent to the Higher Education Department that will issue a notification regarding the appointment of Kamran as PU VC for the tenure of four years. “Why was a shady person selected when two other competent candidates were also present? He has already served for four years there was no need to re-nominate him,” a PU faculty member said, adding “clearly the CM is not serious about solving the problems of the education community”. It is important to mention here that the PU ASA protested over the appointment of Kamran because they alleged that his previous tenure was full of irregularities, corruption and illegal appointments. They maintained that the VC had destroyed the varsity and his nomination for another term would give nothing to the varsity except the corruption and violation of merit. “We do not have a personal grudge against Dr Kamran, we are only protesting because PU would suffer if his reappointed,” another faculty member said, adding that Kamran had also violated the policy of one man one post during his tenure, apart from other irregularities.
