The Sindh High Court (SHC) postponed a petition on Monday that sought disqualification of the members of the parliament possessing dual citizenship. The court also directed the petitioner to bring the record of the members having dual nationality from the Election Commission of Pakistan. Human Right Commission South Asia’s representative Iqbal Kazmi, in his constitutional petition, had submitted that people who possess dual citizenship cannot qualify as elected representatives in the national and provincial assemblies under Article 62 of the constitution as well as under the general election laws.
During the proceeding, the head of the two-member divisional bench of the court, Justice Maqbool Baqar, remarked that the country is already facing a crisis and the petition might further aggravate the situation. The petitioner replied that incompetent parliamentarians are responsible for the crisis and not the judiciary.
